Summary/Abstract: In this paper we outline the status of the discipline of folklore studies among Albanian academics in Kosovo, both now and in the period since their beginnings in Kosovo. In examining the unfavourable circumstances under which folklore studies currently function, as well as looking at examples from local and international practise, we can assess the possibilities for changing this situation. A beneficial change in the status of folklore studies is important when one understands that the material for study, folklore, is continually being created, while the academic discipline, folklore studies, is increasingly narrow in scope. Dilemmas and ideas continue to remain open, as change from within requires will, readiness, and professional training of the collective rather than the individual.
