Summary/Abstract: The present study highlights the activity in the area of church music of some monastic protopsaltis serving at Moldavian monasteries in the 20th century, who were also composers. Following their ancestors’ legacy, they created chants necessary for everyday offices, some of which remain popular to this day. Protopsaltis such as Irinarh Vântu (of Neamţ and Durău monasteries), Gherasim Stamate (Neamţ Monastery), Filotei Moroşanu Hanganu (Văratic Monastery), and Victor Ojog and Chiril Arvinte (Neamţ Monastery), represent landmarks in the church music tradition of the past century, many of them proving to be remarkable educators as well.
