The mid-european initiative as a form of post-communist countries cooperation

Summary/Abstract: Violent events in Mid-Eastern Europe in the late 80s and early 90s of the 20th century, called the nations' autumn, resulted in the decline of the Yaltan order on the European continent. The abolition of the communist system in this part of Europe put an end to political, economic and military cooperation based on such agreement as the Warsaw Treaty. Countries in the grey zone between West Europe and Russia faced the necessity to take up diplomatic moves to design a new Mid-European structure. There are two directions in integration movement of post-communist countries. One aims at gaining membership in West European institutions such as NATO and the European Union. The other is a pursuit towards closer regional cooperation. The Mid-European Initiative is an example of a regional Mid-European and South European association, which enables new post-communist democracies to join the free world, to strenghten their fragile political systems and market economies, and finally to make tnem contribute to integration sysytems on the continent.
