Summary/Abstract: The article investigates the problem of expressiveness (emotiveness) of the phraseological units in English. The extent of the units’ motivation is undoubtedly related to the notion of expressiveness. We distinguish three types of phraseological units according to their degree of motivation: completely motivated units, partially motivated units and idioms (unmotivated units). The completely motivated phraseological units express the slightest degree of emotiveness due to their transparency of meaning, the commonness of the image and the high frequency of use whereas the unmotivated phraseological units (the idioms) express the highest degree of emotiveness.
