Summary/Abstract: The following analytical reflections have been prompted by a pilot survey arbitrarily entitled "What Bulgarians think of the Gypsies" and conducted within Comparative Ethnocultural Studies, optional fieldwork for fifth-year sociology students. The assignment was modest: each student was to conduct and analyze five, free interviews. All we expected to get was food for thought. We wanted to try to understand what was behind (or under) what is generally defined as the Bulgarian's negative idea about Gypsies, the everyday ideologies that "explained" this negative idea; and how Bulgarians justified - to themselves and to others -the negative attitude to Gypsies: mildly speaking, the reluctance to establish any relationships with Gypsies whatsoever.
