The Body in a Camp

Summary/Abstract: Review: Bożena Karwowska, Ciało, seksualność, obozy zagłady [‘Body, Sexuality, Extermination Camps’], Universitas, Kraków 2009. The review emphasises a modern character of this treatise, claiming it to be an attempt to ‘regain’ concentration-camp literature by making it part of international humanities of our time (feminism, gender studies, G. Agamben’s philosophy). The chapters on female camp prose – i.e. works by S. Szmaglewska, Z. Romanowiczowa, Z. Posmysz – have been deemed most valuable, along with S. Grzesiuk’s article on camp testimonies proving of value because of the author’s ‘margins of culture’ perspective. The reviewer notes the research-wise fertile concept whereby the whole treatise is centred around the motif of ‘body’, approached as a counterpoint area against the sphere of ‘intellect’ and ‘spirituality’, co-forming the centre of a patriarchal culture.
