Considerations on the research of socio-spatial structures from the city of Iaşi. “Muntenimea” mahalle to 1800. Time and space

Summary/Abstract: Studying urban settlements has always been a challenge for researchers, as urban life, regardless of periods and areas, has been characterized by dynamism and diversification. In the case of the Romanian Principalities, the features that the political, economic and geographical contexts imposed on the urban areas brought forth their particularities. The subject of the present research concerns the oriental stage of the city of Iasi and the investigation of one of the most interesting urban phenomena characterizing the medieval city in this segment of its chronology: the mahalle (suburb). The presence of “mahalle” in the urban communities led to the creation of smaller communities, as the “mahalle” had its own economic, social and religious life. “Muntenimea” mahalle was one of the most important spatial structures of Iasi from the medieval period. Located in northern part of the City of Iasi it had a different path from other such structures of this type. In this article we achieve a presentation of “Muntenimea” mahalle until the nineteenth century from spatial and temporal point of view.
