Summary/Abstract: In the case of the Romanian Principalities, the features that the political, economic and geographical contexts imposed on the urban areas brought forth their particularities, the cities in this part of Europe having “their own history”. The elements that the Romanian provinces borrowed from the Western area in the 14th and 15th centuries, adapting them to the local specificity and transforming them according to the 16th and 17th century Ottoman influences, led to a specific evolution of the urban communities from this zone. Along with the existence of the mahalles (which appear in the Romanian Countries in the 16th, with the accentuation of Ottoman occupation and influence in the area) further marks attest the oriental influence in the cities of the Romanian countries such as: the lack of fortifications, uncontrolled expansion of the space, the subordination of the city to the princely power, but also the power held by the Church in the urban space. The sources of that time present a layered urban world in mahalle, diverse and having its own rules, often unwritten, starting from those regarding the territorial expansion, to those concerning social life and the economic, cultural or urban development.
