Summary/Abstract: In the attempt to find ways of developing the Polish countryside during the so-called system transformation cultural issues were low on the list of priorities. A consequence was the drop in rural inhabitants' cultural activity. Since in conditions of a free market economy most culture related goods function along the same lines as consumer goods, the rural inhabitants' cultural activity was essentially determined by the highly unsatisfactory financial situation of their households. In this situation a television set and secondly a radio determined the possibilities of cultural participation of the rural population since it was television and radio which provided most of what the average rural inhabitant had access to and expected as far as culture was concerned.
