Summary/Abstract: The paper refers to a key strategic decision which sets an optimal rate of growth of an organization. In modern management theories strategic offensive positions are preferred, which are reflected in the strategies of expansive development strategies. They facilitate the accomplishment of a strategic leadership and the usage of economies of scale to create competitive advantage. The results of empirical studies presented in this paper indicate that surveyed entrepreneurs and managers prefer expansive strategic concepts, which are focused on the dynamic growth perceived as a prerequisite for success. In those conditions it seems desirable to focus on the strategies of stabilization and defending of market positions as an alternative way of achieving success. Long-term persistence on positions achieved with a good economic performance is certainly a particularly desirable expression of the success. It requires an accurate and suitable strategy that would help to stabilize the market position and which guaranties a noticeable qualitative development, expressed in the efficiency of an organization’s, competitive advantage and not necessarily in its growth.
