THE LIBERATION OF MECCA – TEACHING NOTES

Summary/Abstract: Eight years after the exile from Mecca, Muhammad, (pbuh) and the Muslims returned to their native city together with their families. Abu Sufyan, the leader of Mecca, embraced Islam upon the Muslims’ arrival to Mecca and called upon all the citizens of Mecca to remain peaceful since Mohammad (pbuh) had promised them protection and He also promised there would not had been any revenge against them, regardless of the acts they had committed against and their behavior toward the Muslims. The Prophet, (pbuh) has forgiven the citizens of Mecca all the persecutions and abuse toward the Muslims. He cleared the Ka’ba of all the statues and prayed two rekats there. After the liberation of Mecca, the Prophet had declared: ‘There will be no cut branches, no birds scared, no berries picked, except to feed the local population.’ This lesson teaches us the following: - To develop the sense of belonging to Ummet of Muhammad (pbuh), - To develop love toward the Prophet (pbuh), - To accept Muhammad, (pbuh), as a positive example, a role model, - To take notice of moral values of Muhammad (pbuh) and the Muslims during the return to Mecca, - Demonstrates how the Muslims behaved in territories they had conquered, - To show respect and consideration for each and every human life, honor and private property, – Shows that the residents of Mecca, who in peace and dignity observed the arrival of the Muslims and Muhammad (pbuh), suffered no consequences after the conquest of the city.
