Summary/Abstract: The underlying assumption of this paper is that over the last seven decades Serbia has been subject to anti-modernization processes that have reached their peak over the last two decades in the form of anti-urbanity. Consequently, the paper analyzes the sustainability of “standardized” rural-urban dichotomies which serve as the foundation of most models of cultural shaping of society. Resistance to the values of civil society, which is urban by its very nature, spreads through culture channels as both a cause and an effect. The paper attempts to posit an answer to the question of whether the “crisis of culture” emerges as a cause or as a consequence of anti-urban processes. Additionally, the paper determines the role of social actors in producing material and spiritual paradigms of anti-urbanity.
