Basic Problems of the Gypsy Ethnic Group in Bulgaria

Summary/Abstract: Some of the more important data about the socio-economic, educational and health status of the Roma contained in the survey "The Gypsies in the Transition Period" are presented in the article. Attention is focused mainly on the negative processes and tendencies afoot in the Roma community in recent years which show an accelerating disintegration of this ethno-cultural group, its marginalisation and its descent to the bottom of the social scale in the long term. Comparative data characterising the changes in their way of life, their migrational attitudes and behaviour, their socioeconomic and living conditions and their education have been quoted. Special attention is focused on the spread of negative stereotypes and prejudices in Bulgarian society which give rise to discriminative attitudes and behaviour towards representatives of the Roma community.
