Summary/Abstract: One hundred and seventy eight citizens of both sexes, aged between 18 and 75, have rated the probability for three types of crime incidence at 11 characteristic locations in the city. Through multidimensional scaling it was found that three types of signals coming from the city environment increase expectancies for crime incidence. These are related to conditions that impose cognitive overload and pure orientation, absence of other people and insufficient social control, and indicators of heightened risk of confronting individuals in an aggressive emotional state. No age differences were found, but consistent sex-related ones were demonstrated, with women perceiving higher risk than men. A consistent effect of individual differences in the need for safety was found, whereby individuals with a higher need tend to perceive higher risk.
