Summary/Abstract: The following article is an attempt at describing consequences of the cultural turn for the vision of the implied reader in intercultural communication. The starting point for the considerations is Elfriede Jelinek’s novel Die Ausgesperrten (Wonderful, wonderful times) that best illustrates the difficulties involved in the reconstruction of implicitly referenced cultural phenomena, such as the ‘Halbstarke’ (of the 50’s), ‘Wilde Cliquen’ (from the times of the Weimar Republic) and ‘Edelweißpiraten’ (of the latter half of the 30’s). The conclusions reached are valid for any translational reconstructions of cultural phenomena that have become a part of the source culture and often influence the network of connotations for many names (not to be found in dictionaries).
