Summary/Abstract: The papers continues the re-examination of some classical text of Joseph Schumpeter on the economic development both in capitalist and non-exchange (communist) economies (Tchalakov 1997). These ideas are juxtaposed with two recent studies of the non-market economies in former socialist countries (Kornai 1992; Revol 1994) in order to reveal the characteristic features of these economies and their capacities for technological innovation. The aim of the analysis is to build an explanatory model of the innovation potential of non-market economies.
