Considerations about hoarding during the time of Stephen the Great

Summary/Abstract: In the first part of the article the author makes an analysis of the hoards from Moldavia, dating between 1300-1600, with a special focus on the hoards from the time of Stephen the Great. The great Moldavian ruler continued the numismatic reform started by his predecessor, Petru Aron; the new coin (the Grosso) was smaller but containing more silver. Nevertheless, the reform was not successful, the Turkish Asper and the Hungarian Denar remaining the common coins in daily transactions. The hoard from Cârpiţi (Iaşi) is very interesting: its terminus post-quem is the years 1463-1464 and the hoard is devoid of Moldavian coins. An explanation for this situation could be that the monetary emissions of Stephen the Great started after 1465 (perhaps after the second assault of Chilia). There might had been some limited monetary emissions after 1457, but they became more substantial only after 1465.
