Summary/Abstract: Since its beginnings, Christian theology has interpreted the revelation of God’s existence in Exodus 3:14: “I am he who is” (Ehjeh aszer Ehjeh, Egoeimi ho oon, Ego sum qui sum), presenting it, above all, systematically and metaphysically as Existence or Existent in an absolute way, and secondarily proexistentially as “Being aid and saviour.” The metaphysical understanding was captured in a brilliant way by St. Thomas Aquinas as “Subsistent Being Itself” (Ipsum Esse Subsistens). Not until recently have we paid attention to the fact that Jesus Christ credited himself with Yahweh’s attribute by saying Ego eimi (“I am”). In view of this fact, it now needs to be added that infinite Existence is God’s essence – and it is not anonymous, but personal, expressed by “I am.” Thus, the most significant reason for existence is the Divine Person.
