Summary/Abstract: INTERNATIONAL LAW // The legal aspects of biodiversity in the marine zones lying beyond the jurisdiction of States present an unexplored subject-matter of international law. This article analyses the present legal regime of conservation and the sustainable utilization of the biodiversity in those zones. The author reaches the conclusion that the implementation of the existing legislation strengthens the rights and obligations of the States and international organizations with regard to the conservation of marine biodiversity and that at this stage one hardly needs any other legal instruments. The author believes that the active engagement of the United Nations Security Council would definitely help to prevent the irreversible violation of biodiversity in the marine zones lying beyond the jurisdiction of States.
