Summary/Abstract: The paper raises the issue of the participation of transport in spreading knowledge and innovation. Properly functioning transport can improve the innovativeness of regions through the diffusion of knowledge or by stimulating the transfer of technology, introducing new products and services on new markets and indirectly by attracting foreign direct investments. The innovative potential of knowledge economy concentrates in metropolises and metropolitan areas. The economic potential of a region and the travel time to other large cities have the biggest impact on the transport based accessibility to knowledge and innovation of each region. In Poland the Mazowieckie Voivodeship has the highest degree of transport accessibility to knowledge and innovation while the lowest could be attributed to the Warminsko- Mazurskie, Lubuskie and Podlaskie Voivodships.
