Summary/Abstract: Issues addressed and explored in the paper cover the evolution of technological intensity of Polish foreign trade, taking into special account low-tech sectors (mainly metal and shipbuilding industry) in the period 2001-2012. Programmes aimed at their restructurisation did not, however, stop the tendency of decreasing comparative (competitive) advantages, bearing also in mind limitations resulting from the membership in the European Union and trade liberalisation in the world economy. Henceforth the author embarks on the analysis of trade streams in Polish exports and imports through the changes in their intensity of production factors and trade balance, while basing on the defined research sample he identifies the evolution of revealed comparative advantages, import penetration as well as revealed advantages in trade. For the purpose of the research the data at the 4-digit disaggregation level of the Harmonised System were used. Poland as a country of the middle income is about to face a substantial threat of preservation of existing developmental gap. This means that an active industrial policy remains crucial. It should focus both on challenges how to strengthen the innovative potential, as well as to undertake protective measures for declining industries. Their significance in the context of economic security is a direct consequence of several hundred thousand jobs within sectors covered by this research. This fact is of particular importance for the stabilisation of social moods as well as for programming and potentially wide acceptance of ambitious strategy of economic development.
