Summary/Abstract: The article presents and describes the motives for fighting against loanwords in specialist germanising dictionaries published in 1800-1945. In the history of opposition to loanwords in Germany, national motives were overtly domineering, sometimes they even transformed into nationalist ones. Apart from that, the following motives appear in purist specialist lexicographic studies: cultural-patriotic (kulturpatriotische Motive), communicative (kommunikative Motive), criticizing language snobbism (verhaltenskritische Motive), esthetic (ästhetische Motive), cognitive (kognitive/erkenntnistheoretische Motive), structural (sprachstrukturelle Motive) and enlightening (bildungspraktische/aufklärerische Motive
