Summary/Abstract: Politics plays a crucial role in the transformation of socio-economic order of every country. The same applies to Sweden, where it was the supremacy of social democrats that allowed the foundation of the welfare state. In the recent decade, however, the Swedish political scene has evolved in a way affecting the welfare state itself. The electoral support for social democrats has waned while it grew stronger for center-rightist parties. These parties seem to have accepted the leading role of the welfare state in Swedish society and do not support its deconstruction any longer. Thus, the political theories that tell left and right parties apart on the ground of their attitude towards welfare state have lost much of their explanatory power, at least in the Swedish case.
