Summary/Abstract: In many European Union countries electricity networks and gas pipelines are still owned by the vertically integrated companies (VIC) responsible for generation, supply, transmission and distribution of energy. Vertical integration gives them the possibility to support their own subcompanies through the utilization of a dominant position in the market which consistently inhibits the development of competitive market. Therefore, to cope with the problem, the European Commission proposed within the Electricity and Gas Directive to separate network operators from the VIC. The realization of this process of “unbundling” in the electricity and gas sector, as one of the main instruments of building the competitive energy market, is presented in this paper on the Polish example.
