PSHCYCHOMECANIC APPROACH TO THE TRANSLATION OF THE PRETERIT INTO THE IMPARFAIT IN A SPECIFIC CONTEXT

Summary/Abstract: This article aims at explaining why the simple past applied to verbs of action used in a specific context is translated into the French imparfait. For this purpose, it establishes a distinction between the potential significate and the actual significate of the preterit and shows how the potential significate of the preterit can be actualized in discourse in an integral, inchoative or median way. Only the median interception of perfectivity leads to a translation of the preterit into the imparfait. The interpretation of the time-event implied by the preterit relies inter alia on a series of cause-effect relationships between the lexical aspect, the grammatical aspect and the textual use of the verb.
