Summary/Abstract: The monk Gherman, who, with his eyebrows his moustache and his beard painted in cherry-red during his sleep in a souvenir-letter belonging to Vasile Alecsandri, is not totally unknown by the Romanians under this playful aspect. From a cultural point of view, he had an important role in the troubled history of the publication of the famous Hronica Românilor şi a mai multor neamuri. The accent is stressed on the original elements of Gheorghe Vida’s biography (his laic name), where the character’s multicultural opening constitutes an implicite background especially in as far as the francisant and manifestly francophile dimensions are concerned. Beyond his religious writings and publications, this character must surely remain in the history of the cultural and linguistic openings of the Romanians towards France, the first modern grammarian in the French-Romanian field. We have to deal with an anteriority and a historical quality which should finally be recognized and affirmed without reserve. These merits are not singular. The French-Romanian lexicography also owes him for the very beginnings of its chronology.
