Summary/Abstract: In this article we seek to examine to what extent and in what way utopia and dystopia are present in contemporary film production; we use procedures of semiotic analysis to identify the presence of these features and their relationship with real history in two ways: by textual analysis of a film set in a dystopian world, the newly released, Mad Max: Fury Road, as a significant object and as a discourse; then analyzing the interpretations, in the media, of the dystopian character of this film, and the controversy that film criticism generated on social networks in Brazil – which was one of the reasons of our choice of subject – as significant material for analyzing the viewer’s subjective relationship to this cinematographic narrative.
