Summary/Abstract: The article refers to the story from I Kings (I Samuel) 28, describing the meeting between King Saul and the Witch of Endor. The study is focused on the particular rendering of the Greek lexeme εγγαστρίμυθος, – ‘ventriloquist’ in the Slavonic translation of this topos in the Archival Chronograph in comparison with seven other Slavonic manuscripts, the Ostrog Bible, the Chronicle of George Synkellos, the Septuagint and the Vulgate. Based on the material collected from other manuscripts as well, the author suggests that in a lost reading of the Septuagint instead of the lexeme εγγαστρίμυθος, in all probability stood the word χειρόμαντις; – ‘chiromancer’, ‘palm reader’.
