Summary/Abstract: This research is an overall presentation of results acquired from field research on the Roma population in Yugoslavia conducted by Tatomir Vukanovic. Beside the interest in the ethnic history, the life of the people, the customs and the beliefs of the Roma who have been living on the territory of Yugoslavia and Serbia especially, the corner stones of the research are the authentic ethnic and folk community and the long lasting efforts to maintain it at the cost of poverty and slow development in comparison to the surrounding environment they have been living in. The more beneficial socio-economic conditions that the "golden age of socialism" in Serbia used to provide, improved the quality of life of the Roma in this geographical and ethnical area. The improved life standard has transformed the Roma population socially and thus assimilated them into the social and cultural milieu of the Balkans.
