Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates whether social transformation in post-socialist countries can be explained with civilization and culture. On the basis of social and economic indicators it is argued that post-socialist countries with Catholic/Protestant traditions have outperformed societies with Orthodox and Islamic traditions. Although the paper is prone to accept validity of cultural explanation of social change, it warns also that other factors are at work, in addition to civilization and culture.
