From Normative Notion of Classics to Classical Situations

Summary/Abstract: The paper has been motivated by an attempt to recast the notion of “classics” as “pantheon” of “sacred” knowledge, giving direction to the future, or source of wisdom, consecrated by the tradition, which in case of crisis we always might return to. Instead of this normative self-evidence it presents a kind of functional interpretation of “classics”, focusing on an idea of J. Schumpeter from his History of Economic Analysis: the idea of “classical situations”. The strange figures, inhabiting the borders between different worlds, the “bearers” of “classical situations” are also described in their qualities of “bilinguals” and “bitemporals”.
