Masks and Faces: Bulgarian Sociology in Search of Itself

Summary/Abstract: The paper offers a reflection upon the existential situation of Bulgarian sociology in the times of totalitarian domination, when, under the garment of its officialization, it was eventually thrown off the tracks of its everyday being. In such a situation various intellectual communities had to accomplish through compensatory activities what could not be done through the naturally functioning public life that was lacking. The importance of this perspective is that it provides immediate access to entrenched power constellations, which are carefully concealed by the normality of the taken-for-granted sociological life.
