Intralingual Considerations of German Phraseology

Summary/Abstract: This article describes the relation between phraseology and language area and presents the characteristics of the phraseological stock of the German language spoken in Austria from the persepective of national standard varieties. Investigations on the area of circulation of phraseologisms in dialects, regional colloquial languages and national language variants prove that the area of phraseologisms cannot be directly compared with the areal expansion of a (single) language. Therefore, neither the concept of pluricentrism – introduced for illustrating the specific of an official language spoken in different areas – nor the idea of the existence of a homogenous phraseological stock within a certain area doesn’t correspond to the linguistic reality from the point of view of phraseology and language use.
