Some Reflections on the Romanian Names of Medicinal Plants

Summary/Abstract: Folk medical language has been under the close analysis of linguists, folk scientists and doctors for a long time. Besides the names of diseases, many of the researchers have taken into discussion medicinal plants, often used, especially in the past. The present paper, the first in a forthcoming series, focuses on the complexity of the aspects which are related to the Romanian names of medicinal plants. We have in view only the phytonims which have a formal connection with the maladies for which they are used as cures, and we first and foremost try to clarify some aspects concerning the national system of naming of medicinal plants, in comparison with their folk denomination.
