Summary/Abstract: In the case of armed forces participating in peacekeeping operations, for missions authorized by the Security Council of the United Nations, control is exerted internationally by the United Nations. Contributing states retain control over disciplinary matters and have the right to withdraw their soldiers at any time. At regional level, inter-parliamentary institutions, within or related to international organizations dealing with international issues of security and defense, have limited power of control. Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization appears more as a link between parliaments and the Alliance than as a supervisory body of decisions taken by the decision-making body within NATO.
