Summary/Abstract: The permanent diversification and multiplication of the lexis accompanies the movement of technical innovation. In order to correctly designate a new referent, language is always able to create a new autonomous word. The stock of neologisms is spread through terms, a special category of words aimed at giving names to notions related to fields encompassing human life. This paper ranks the capacity of English and French to make use of their combinatory resources to expand scientific and technical lexis, by means of derivation and by building new semantic units: compound words and complex lexical units. Affixes and radicals typical of scientific terms are analysed, with a special emphasis on the international terms and on the formal and semantic cohesion degree of the compound words and of the complex lexical units. The rational learning of derived terms and of the complex lexical units leads to a rapid and appropriate recognition of the pattern according to which they are built and implicitly, to the possibility to develop new terms which ”specialised dictionaries” will undoubtedly validate in time.
