Summary/Abstract: The author deals with the first alphabet books in the Mari language (the Meadow Mari dialect), which were published bythe Brotherhood of St. Gury in Kazan (1870 and 1873). The specific features of denoting of the Mari vowels in these writtenmonuments and the dialectal and historical features of the Meadow Mari vowel system are studied in the article.
