On the First Translations from Jules Verne in Romanian

Summary/Abstract: The research tries to intercept the reception of Jules Verne’s work in the Romanian culture. Showing that, beyond the direct access at his work, ensured by a very powerful French trend in our culture, with one exception, the translations appeared relatively late, at the beginning of the 20th century, being regarded as an entertaining reading, devoted to the teen-agers. Researching, the exception, namely the translation into Romanian of The Castle from the Carpathians, it is underlined the historical context which facilitated it, the fight for national emancipation of the Transylvanians and, more precisely the process of the Memorandum initiated in 1891 by the political élite of the Transylvanians to the emperor Franz-Joseph. It was considered that both the editing of the novel represents a proof of Jules Verne’s political interest in the position of the Romanians, and the translation of the novel shortly after its editing, proves that it has been perceived by the Romanian elite as a pleading for its own nation.
