Summary/Abstract: Music education research is often considered only as a small part of musicology, while pedagogics has an insignificant role in it. In Finland music education is mostly researched by future pedagogues which may be one reason for the fact that research has mainly focused on teachers and teaching. The distortion of music education research can be seen e.g. in the chasm between the written and received curriculum. Lately this subject matter has been studied at Finnish music institutes, secondary and high schools, in class teacher education and education of music subject teachers. Music education research should be more polyphonic so that it gives voice to different learners: successful and unsuccessful students and fans of classical as well as popular music.
