Summary/Abstract: The paper provides an overview of the ongoing armed conflicts in 2014: in Syria,Iraq and Africa. This year’s review focuses on conflicts of high intensity, both interms of military operations and one-sided violence against civilians. Although allof these conflicts are mainly internal or internationalized – the latter due to support(financial, training, sometimes armed) offered to various sides by external actors– they still have a significant impact on regional security. The paper starts with ananalysis of two ongoing armed conflicts in Syria and Iraq, in which the unexpectedexpansion of ISIL has become a key factor influencing the security dynamics in theMiddle East, which in turn led to international military involvement. The leitmotifin this year’s analysis of the conflicts in Africa is the development of jihadist groupsand their impact on conflicts in Libya, Nigeria, and Somalia. The paper also brieflyrefers to the escalation of an ethno-political conflict in South Sudan due to its intensityand brutality.
