Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, the economic relationships between border regions are developing and intensifying. The range of mutual cooperation is also expanding including not only trade and production, but also science and technology. Tightening the relationships means that the process of creation and diffusion of knowledge in the cross-border dimension occurs. Transformations of these regions economies’ structures should aim at developing the crossborder innovation systems. The operation of such a system can bring a lot of benefits. However, the process of creating such a cross-border innovation system is complex and gradual because it requires the mitigation of the existing distances. Among them, the institutional distance needs to be indicated, in the formal but also the informal dimension. The aim of the article is to analyse the development of cross-border economic relations and to identyfy the benefits resulting from the cooperation in the field of innovation. The cooperation on innovation exectuted in the Venlo-Niederrhein region on the German-Dutch borderland and institutional barriers of its implementation will also be discussed.
