Summary/Abstract: Two interrelated issues are examined in the article. First it is the issue of the localization of the Slavic КНѦЖЕНИѤ to which the apostle of the Slavs Saint Methodius had been appointed as governor in the beginning of his career. All the hypotheses advanced so far are examined and additional arguments for one of them are advanced, viz. that he was the governor of the Principality of Smolens. It is localized not in the Rhodope Mountain as is usually assumed but between the rivers Struma and Mesta, in the region of Drama, adjoining Philipi. On the basis of this an attempt is made to reconstruct an event dated to 837 when vast territories of today’s Macedonia and South Albania were annexed by the Bulgarian State, and it is claimed that the future “First archbishop of the Slavs” took part in it.
