Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the main factors shaping the absence and presence behaviour of employees. The indicated factors were related to both the inner motivation of an employee and work environment. The article also attempts to answer a question important from the perspective of human resources management: How can managers shape the decisions of employees to come to work while they are sick and how can absenteeism be managed? In order to achieve this aim, a review of the literature concerning absenteeism and presenteeism at work was done. The results of research related to the factors creating the culture of absenteeism were analysed and an attempt was made. Maximizing productivity and reducing labour costs poses to managing quite serious dilemma in the situation when an employee is sick − to get him to come the work and do his job, or rather to persuade him to stay at home. Line managers have a very important role in the management of absenteeism in the workplace.
