Summary/Abstract: In the context of globalization and IT revolution, the studies on intercultural communication have step by step asserted as a priority line of research for social and human sciences, as the contacts and interdependencies among states, societies and cultures have multiplied and increased. The analysis and interpretation of cultural differences represent today a key topic for cultural studies and also for the entire complex of communication sciences. In the opinion of some theoreticians, intercultural communication should be recognised as a new discipline, along with those already acknowledged in modern times. It is a synthesis discipline, which has acquired in the last decades a distinct place in the curricula of many universities around the world. In this study I tried to reconstruct the historical context in which this discipline came into being, to show its multiple theoretical sources and to outline some topics and lines of research for a better understanding of the interferences between cultural and communication processes in contemporary world.
