Exegetic Texts in Medieval Bulgarian Literature from the Tenth–Eleventh Century

Summary/Abstract: This study presents an overview of the exegetic literature in Bulgaria during the tenth and eleventh centuries and the scholarly debates about it. The attempts to classify the exegetic genres according to their themes and function, provides a literary and historical analysis of some of the precise works, and comes to some more general conclusions (based on this broad review) about the literary life in Bulgaria during the reign of Tsar Symeon. The article presents a new hypothesis about the character of George Choiroboskos’ treatise on poetical figures O obrazěx” (Περὶ τρόπων ποιητικω̃ν) and about the Izbornik of 1073.
