Urban sprawl processes on the example of Nowy Sącz in Lesser Poland Voivodeship

Summary/Abstract: Intensive processes of suburbanization that followed the political and economical transformation in Poland occured a vital factor influencing the changes in spatial structure as well as the development processes. These changes refer not only to metropolitan areas but also to cities being the subregional centres. The purpose of this research has been to identify the features that are specific for the suburbanization processes. The analyses have been conducted in a selected medium sized city in Poland – Nowy Sącz, and surrounding rural communities. For this paper various types of data relating to different periods of time have been analysed: demographic, land use, new housing construction rate. The obtained results reflect the existence of the suburbanisation phenomenon as well as some evidence of urban sprawl processes.
