Summary/Abstract: Lexicological analyses of OCS are mainly based on translated texts and usually try to establisch the meaning of OCS lexemes on the basis of their Greek equivalents. Such an approach suffers from methodological shortcomings. An alternative (especially in the case of original texts) is provided by the contextual approach, determining meaning on the basis of careful analysis of the linguistic context. The usefulness of this approach is demonstrated by the analysis of the lexemes триѩзыьнъ/триѩзыьникъ, кънигъни/бѹкварь, бѹкы/кънигы/писмѧ, грьк-/елин- in texts going back to the Cyrillo-Methodian period (mainly the Vitae of Constantine-Cyril and Methodius and Hrabr’s treatise On the letters).
