Summary/Abstract: This article aims to explore how the term “Culture” was conceived, analyzed and articulated as an analytical concept in the field of ethnography during the period of communism in Albania. Our discussion will be focused on how Albanian ethnographers understood, read and interpreted “culture” both as a concept and human phenomena in their scientific world. By drawing on data deriving from interviews with Albanian ethnographer that worked at the Institute of Folk Culture, as well as on several publications of the time, our analysis focuses on the relationship between power-knowledge in a “dictatorial situation”, and on how the concept of culture used in Albanian ethnography was simultaneously a product as well as an instrument through which power was exercised in Albanian society during communism. In the final part of this article I draw the attention of the reader as well as to the Albanian scientific community endeavoring in the field of socio-cultural studies that the concept of culture forged during communism is still haunting the field of ethnography, ethnology and anthropology in Albania, and not only the time has corne to broaden our view on such concept, but also the main theses of Albanian ethnography need to be critically reevaluated in order to overcome the “nightmare of the dead generations” and look ahead in new perspectives.
