‘Idio-numbers’. A Contrastive Analysis between English and Romanian

Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to survey the first eleven numbers, from zero to ten, in English and Romanian idiomatic languages. The coinage ‘idio-number’ streamlines the analysis of meaningful, relevant numbers, on which both English and Romanian idiomatic expressions are based; nevertheless, the significant numbers following ten are not considered here, but will surely provide the ground for further research. Approached gradually, the eleven idio-numbers are explained one by one from a semantic perspective, they are compared, contrasted and provided with examples when necessary. As further illustrated, they are sometimes (as) alike as (two) peas in a pod in both languages, owing to real-world circumstances, some other times they differ completely or to a certain extent – two sides of the same coin, due to cultural or social factors.
