Summary/Abstract: Belonging to the group of Romance languages, the Romanian language originates from Vulgar Latin, but was noticeably influenced by Slavic languages, as well as by Greek, Turkish, Hungarian and German languages. Such a peculiarity represents the focus of the present study, which aims to review the Turkish influence on the Romanian language, the emphasis being actually laid on the surviving words in the present-day vocabulary. Since any cultural or linguistic change is generally rooted in a wider social and historical context, a brief overview of the Ottoman Empire is provided at first, followed by a short description of the Romanian vocabulary. The Turkish elements in the contemporary Romanian lexis and their classification on frequency layers aresurveyed next, together with the semantic alterations that the Turkish borrowings have undergone on the Romanian territory.
